VIVA el Oscar!! SHAPE OF WATER Nabs 4 Oscars, including BEST PICTURE, DIRECTOR

“Everyone that is dreaming of using fantasy to tell the stories about things that are real in the world today, you can do it.  This is the door. Kick it open and come in.”

This was Guillermo del Toro’s parting words as he accepted the Academy Award for Best Picture for THE SHAPE OF WATER.  The amazing run of THE SHAPE OF WATER has now come to a close, culminating in four Oscars (Best Director, Best Production Design and Best Score were the others).

For del Toro, this was the realization of a dream, and he dedicated his win to the young directors that dreamed of some day holding the golden statue, just as he did as a kid in Mexico.  For a man that loves to tell stories with fantasy parables, Oscar glory was a long shot. It was not lost on Guillermo that his quirky film about a woman falling in love with a fish man (with a musical number, no less) was supported by Fox Searchlight Pictures. The company took a bet on an unconventional story and cleaned house.

Here is the complete list of winners from the SHAPE OF WATER, as well as Oscar coverage from ABC:

Best Picture:  THE SHAPE OF WATER

Best Director: Guillermo del Toro

Best Original Score: Alexandre Desplat

Best Production Design: THE SHAPE OF WATER; Paul Denham Austerberry; Set Decoration: Shane Vieau and Jeff Melvin
