Juan Antonio Bayona has been selected to direct the GDT-produced film, HATER. Bayona won acclaim for his directorial effort on THE ORPHANAGE, which was also produced by Del Toro.
The film will be made at Universal, after landing there under del Toro’s first-look deal. According to Variety, co-producer Mark Johnson originally approached Del Toro to direct, but GDT’s commitment to THE HOBBIT made it unlikely. The producers then turned to Bayona.
The Glen Mazzara-scripted adaptation of British author David Moody’s thriller novel is about an epidemic of violence perpetrated by ordinary people.

JoBlo.com has reported that GDT will PRODUCE “Haters”, not direct it. JoBlo reports that in an interview with Jack Rico at ShowBizCafe, GDT said the following: “No… the reality is that I’m producing ‘Haters’. I’m not directing it. That was just rumors. Really, after Hellboy 2, I have no idea what’s next.”

CORRECTION: JoBlo is now reporting that GDT will produce “Haters”: Click here.
JoBlo.com is reporting that Guillermo Del Toro is slated to direct HATERS for Universal Pictures. The film will be based on the book ‘Hater’ by David Moody, author of the ‘August’ series. Here is the summary provided by JoBlo:
Society is rocked by a sudden increase in the number of violent assaults on individuals. Christened ‘Haters’ by the media, the attackers strike without warning. Their attacks are brutal, remorseless and extreme. There are no apparent links between the Haters or their victims and no obvious reason for their violence. In seconds rational, controlled people become vicious killers. Everyone – irrespective of race, gender, age, sexuality or any other imaginable difference – has the potential to become either a Hater or a victim. This is a terror which knows no boundaries. You can no longer trust anyone, no matter how well you think you know them. You can no longer trust yourself. By the end of today you could be a killer. By the end of today you could be dead.
No official word from Guillermo yet, but as don’t jump to any conclusions quite yet on this report. GDT has said he doesn’t know yet what his next project will be after HELLBOY 2, and he has many other projects he is attached to. But we’ll keep an eye on this one here at DTF and we’ll see what happens!
