GDT on PACIFIC RIM 2: “This is happening!”

Guillermo del Toro took to Twitter yesterday to announce that PACIFIC RIM 2 is happening, although with a new director: Stephen S. DeKnight.

According to Deadline.com, Universal Pictures and Legendary is planning for a 3D release, with a script by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus).  This will be the first feature film for DeKnight, who served as executive producer and head writer for Netflix’s DAREDEVIL.

GDT will be involved in the project as executive producer.

Many fans of del Toro feared PACIFIC RIM 2 was dead following an announced delay in the project in September of last year.  No doubt there will some disappointment that GDT will not direct this project, and there is no information at this time as to why – although it could be that schedules are a factor (in other words, Guillermo has tentative plans to direct another project).

del Toro has not announced his next directing project yet, although there are rumors that a remake of FANTASTIC VOYAGE could be next for the visionary director.
