GDT Announces TROLLHUNTERS Spinoff Trilogy on NETFLIX

According to Entertainment Weekly, Guillermo del Toro will be spinning off two additional animated series connected to the vastly popular TROLLHUNTERS series, starting in 2018.

TROLLHUNTERS is just the first installment in a TALES OF ARCADIA trilogy, which will be followed by 3 BELOW in 2018, then WIZARDS in 2019.  The shows will be interconnected, but will have a different mythological focus.

3 BELOW will follow an extraterrestrial storyline. It will “focus on two royal teenage aliens and their bodyguards who escape their home planet” and crash on Earth near Arcadia (the town setting for TROLLHUNTERS).  EW reports the characters are pursued by bounty hunters and must disguise themselves as high school students.

del Toro says it is a “parable about the marginalized.”

“The mothership says, ‘I will give you the shape of people who are invisible, that nobody looks at,’” del Toro says. “So she turns the prince into a Latino boy, the bodyguard into an elderly man, and the princess into a girl.”

WIZARDS will bring together all of the ARCADIA story lines, with “the magical heroes engaged in a battle that will determine the fate of not just [Earth], but also the troll kingdom and the alien world.

Think of it as an animated team-up series, similar to NETFLIX’s Marvel property, THE DEFENDERS.

“In the early season of Trollhunters, we already introduced characters you don’t know how important they are for the [other] two series, that have been in the planning for years,” del Toro says. “Wizards tracks down the whole backstory of Trollhunters and much, much more and brings  all of this group [of shows] to a conclusion.”
