Thanks to the good people at Disney, we have some exclusive new artwork to share from Guillermo del Toro’s new book: TROLLHUNTERS!

TROLLHUNTERS is co-written by del Toro and award-winning author Daniel Kraus, and is scheduled to release in the U.S. on July 14, 2015.

Here is the synopsis:

“You are food. Those muscles you flex to walk, lift, and talk? They’re patties of meat topped with chewy tendon. That skin you’ve paid so much attention to in mirrors? It’s delicious to the right tongues, a casserole of succulent tissue. And those bones that give you the strength to forge your way in the world? They rattle between teeth as the marrow is sucked down slobbering throats. These facts are unpleasant but useful.”

When a 45-year old mystery resurfaces, threatening the lives of everyone in the seemingly sleepy town of San Bernardino, teenager Jim Sturges’ life changes—forever. With terror now on the horizon, Jim will go from typical teen to trollhunter. He’ll have to team up with a band of some of the most unlikely (and some un-human) heroes to battle the monsters he never knew existed. Will his ragtag team survive and save the day? Or will they become the fearful flesh the beasts love to feed on?

TROLLHUNTERS started out as an animated feature with Guillermo’s Disney Double Dare You production label, as we reported in 2009.  Later, in 2010 it moved to DreamWorks.  Both projects fizzled, and much like THE STRAIN (which was pitched for television before it found a home in print), the idea soon morphed into a book opportunity, with del Toro seeking out Kraus to assist.

Unlike, THE STRAIN trilogy (written with Chuck Hogan), this is a young adult novel for ages 12 and up.  It promises to deliver classic del Toro scares, but is meant for the younger set. Says del Toro:

I wanted very much to develop a story that could be written for kids but dealt with a genre that was scary. It essentially combines fairy tales with modern times and is about how difficult it is to be kid. Normally, kids are idealized in animated films. But the growing pains, married with the notion that there is a world right next to us that is completely plagued by creatures of ancient lore, it’s thematically fitting with the rest of my stuff.

The artwork is done by Sean Andrew Murray (@Muttnhead), and it is really great. Check it out yourself below!
