Summary
The Hobbit is set in a time "between the dawn of Faerie and the Dominion of Men," and follows the quest of home-loving Bilbo Baggins (the titular "Hobbit") to win his share of the treasure guarded by the dragon, Smaug. His journey takes him from light-hearted, rural surroundings and into darker, deeper territory, meeting various denizens of the Wilderland along the way. By accepting the disreputable, romantic, fey and adventurous side of his nature (the "Tookish" side) and utilizing both his wits and common sense during the quest, Bilbo develops a new level of maturity, competence and wisdom. Del Toro will direct two films back-to-back. The original story will span both films, with additional content added for Gandalf's investigation into the Necromancer..

"Well we start next year. We are in pre-production. We are writing, designing, designing characters, monsters. Designing all the environments. Developing the technology to shoot it. And it will start in March 2010 and we will shoot for about 370 days or so. And at the end of that we will post-produce for a few months. And then first movie comes out 2011. Second movie comes out 2012."

"The most salient virtue of Bilbo is a very relatable, basic decency and honesty - the fact that here’s a guy who’s going to do the right thing,” Del Toro said of the titular character in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. “Bilbo is a good-hearted man, and the honesty of Bilbo is in direct contrast to the greed of Smaug, which looms large in the entire narrative, but also in the newly acquired greed and pride of Thorin, who becomes intoxicated with power and gold."
"There’s a passage in the book that I love that says Bagginses were normally so predictable that people knew how they were going to act even before they asked the question,” Del Toro said. “But the great thing about Bilbo is that since he is half he influenced by the [Tookish] side of his mother he is more unpredictable character and therefore is faced with moral choices, and it’s beautiful in the narrative when he makes those choices.”

When asked if fan favourite James McAvoy had bagged the the Bilbo Baggins role, he replied: "Not yet. Not yet James McAvoy, not yet Jack Black, or Daniel Radcliffe. There's nothing to fear or celebrate yet. "In six months time we should know," he continued. "We will try to give that casting news at Christmas as a gift."

We are not attempting to do an exact replication. "The Hobbit" occurs a little over a half-century before the events of "Lord of the Rings." It transverses areas of Middle-earth that Peter did touch on [but also] many others he did not.

For whatever reason, I never hooked into sword and sorcery. I really rediscovered fantasy through my love of filmmakers as a filmmaker. Something kind of popped and jelled. I now can empathize with one side of the fantasy genre without ever wandering into lubricated musclemen with giant swords. "The Hobbit" occupies a particular seat in fantasy that is irreplaceable. They can dredge up old cadavers in my closet. I'm not running for president. I'm a f---ing filmmaker! I'm just trying to make the movie I want to.
On the second film
[The second film will be about] the transition from the golden years to the rise of Sauron. It's essentially the beginning of civil war and uprisings. It's a very interesting time.
Will Ian Holm be back as Bilbo?
[Holm] certainly is the paragon we aspire to. He will be involved in some manner, I'm sure. But at his age ... it's too early to tell. We are just in the early stages. It's too early to make commitments of that sort. We prefer to let the screenplay and the way the character comes to life guide us in the casting.

When I was a kid I bought the Hobbit and I bought the Lord Of The Rings novels. I bought them at the same time. I used my hard earned allowance … … to buy them, and I was about eleven … and I tried to get into Lord Of The Rings first, because that was one my friend recommended, and I couldn’t get into it back then. Now I’ve read them completely ....but The Hobbit trapped me. It really, really trapped me....I identified with Bilbo. It spoke to me about how the world is out there, and how Bilbo led this sort of cloistered existence … how he was dragged from being a prissy little guy, to being dragged with this fabulous, a-m-a-zing band of Dwarves into discovering life … and death...That is, the novel, I believe, starts very innocently and ends up, I would say tragically, but it ends up in a very bittersweet note ... sort of the experiences of England in World War One – you know – the experience of losing your innocence but at the same time gaining manhood if you would, gaining adulthood … you know, so its it’s a really fascinating book in that, and it’s the only one that Ive read of Tolkien that reads, that has such a facile engaging personality. Its incredibly – easy to like it.
